Introduction to SRE & role
Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) at IBM focuses on reliability, resiliency and performance of large-scale systems, combining software engineering and systems engineering skills. SREs analyze business needs, design and build solutions, and handle testing, deployment, change management and maintenance for well‑engineered information systems and cloud ecosystems.
This internship is for automation‑focused SREs who will help maintain and administer IBM Cloud PowerVS (Power Virtual Server) Infrastructure‑as‑a‑Service environments to deliver secure, reliable offerings to clients.
Key responsibilities
As an Automation‑focused SRE Intern, you will:

Develop, test, deploy and maintain automation code for procedures/runbooks used in PowerVS data center builds, operations and support activities.

Automate data collection, log processing, infrastructure monitoring and backup/restore of critical log and configuration data for PowerVS data centers.

Build automation to reduce manual toil using shell scripts (bash, etc.), Python, Ansible and related tools and languages.

Develop, test, deploy and maintain automation code for code‑stack updates on infrastructure systems (VIOS, firmware, PowerVC, HMC, Novalink, NIM servers) and supporting systems (jump servers, network nodes, gateways, TSM servers, etc.).

Automate upload, management and maintenance of stock images offered in PowerVS environments.

Create automation to remotely administer AIX and Linux servers, including user ID (add/delete) and password management.
Required education
-
Bachelor’s Degree (in a relevant technical discipline).
-
Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree remains the primary requirement; higher degrees are a plus but not mandatory.
Required technical & professional skills
-
Significant scripting/coding experience for automating various aspects of IBM Power systems administration.
-
Hands‑on automation using Python, shell scripting (bash, etc.), Ansible and similar tools.

Experience with AIX and/or Linux administration, basic commands and networking concepts.

Exposure to Red Hat OpenShift and Kubernetes (containers and orchestration).

Experience or familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure‑as‑Code tooling such as Terraform.

Good communication skills and the ability to explain technical topics clearly.

Strong automation mindset – always looking to replace repetitive manual tasks with scripts and tools.
Preferred technical experience
-
Experience configuring and tuning IBM AIX, VIOS and PowerVC.

Familiarity with IBM Cloud CLI, APIs and Terraform to access and manage PowerVS resources.

Knowledge of IBM Power Systems, IBM Storage Systems, Cisco ACI and Juniper vSRX networking components.

Understanding of system monitoring tools such as Nagios and the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana).
